Anahata Health Clinic
a message from Topaz (March 2009)

Apologies for sounding like an advert, but with the 'credit crunch' well and truly here I thought I would share with FMSSAS members based in the Brighton area, details of low-cost alternative therapies and two new classes currently available at The Anahata Health Clinic in Kemp Town. I’m a patient with the wonderful Dragon Acupuncture Project based at Anahata. I'm very aware that alternative medicine/yoga etc is not everyone's 'cup of tea' and respect the FMSSAS stance on this - but for those who have found benefit or would like to try something new, here are the details for you, including access/how to get there by public transport. I've tried to include as much info as possible to save you further webs searches/phone calls.

Opportunities at the clinic include:

  • Low-cost acupuncture with the Dragon Acupuncture Project – just £12.50 a session for those on low income!
  • Yoga for M.E. drop in classes
  • 10 week Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) starting in April
  • Low-cost Saturday clinic offering a range of alternative therapies for only £15 a session!

Dragon Acupuncture Project Low-Cost Treatments

“The Dragon Acupuncture Project is the UK's first, low-cost, multi-bed acupuncture clinic, and was founded in 2003 by Nik Tilling and Calum Thomson.

Most 'alternative' or 'complementary' therapies remain financially inaccessible to the majority of people. This is usually because these therapies are conducted on a one-to-one basis, taking up to an hour of the practitioner's time. High overhead costs have to be passed to the patient in high treatment charges.

The ethos of the Dragon Project is that acupuncture treatment should be available to all, irrespective of socio-economic class. Acupuncture's power to create positive change rests on its ability to reach the people who need it as often as is necessary. The style of practice we use at the Project allows a much greater section of the Brighton and Hove community to benefit from acupuncture.

This is achieved by two or three practitioners treating several patients together in a single, large room; this is conventional practice in modern-day China. Acupuncture is particularly suited to this style of practice: as the needles are usually left in for twenty to thirty minutes, an acupuncturist can move from patient to patient while the needles to do their work.

This allows us to reduce our overheads and pass this saving on to our patients.

Research carried out at the Dragon in 2006 showed that patients reported many more positive experiences than negative about being treated in such a space. Patients did not only attend because of the low-cost treatments, although this was important, but also to share in the sense of community that is created when several people are treated together.

All practitioners at the Dragon Acupuncture Project are registered members of the British Acupuncture Council and are bound by its code of ethics and safe practice.

Treatment
As a new patient seeking full-body or facial acupuncture, your treatment will start with a consultation of up to one hour during which time the practitioner will take a full case-history and goals for treatment will be discussed. This consultation is always carried out in a private room, and private talking space is available if you need it at other times. You will then receive a treatment in our large clinic room.

Our sliding fee scale is now 30 for initial consultation and first treatment; then £12.50, £15.00 or £18.00 for treatments, depending on people's ability to pay, no proof of income required. Please note that for facial acu we only charge at £15.00 or £18.00 (sliding fee scale), because of the high number of needles used. Patients seeking auricular acupuncture will have a shorter initial consultation of up to 30 minutes followed by treatment lasting about 45 minutes. The first appointment will be charged at £15, followed by 7 for subsequent treatments.

We can also prescribe and supply patent Chinese herbal remedies. These cost between 4 and 12.50 per prescription. We have blankets, gowns, and screens to maintain privacy and dignity.” (Excerpt from website posted with permission)

Jiva’s Happiness Clinic – starts April 6th 2009!
Are you feeling stressed?
Anxious?
Depressed?
Is life hard work?

This course is designed for anyone who answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions. Everyone feels life is hard at times; this course may offer you a way to learn to deal with it all and be happier. The 10 week course starts on Monday 6th April, 2.45-4.45, at Anahata Health Clinic, www.anahatahealth.com.

In recent years, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) has become increasingly popular as a tool to help us deal with stress, anxiety and depression which are so common in modern society. Using the simple tools of mindfulness, we learn different ways of relating to our experience so that we can stop repeating the same old patterns that can lead us into feeling stressed, anxious or just that life is hard work.

MBCT has also been clinically proven to be useful in preventing relapse into depression, and in learning to live with chronic pain.

In this course, mindfulness is taught via a variety of practices which we do in class together in a supportive environment, continuing at home with CDs for guidance. The 10-session course consists of an orientation session, followed by eight weekly two-hour sessions, and an optional follow-up about a month after the eighth week.

The mindfulness techniques taught on this course are accessible to everyone; however this course is not suitable for you at this time if you are suffering from a current clinical mental health problem, or have just suffered a major trauma in your life. It may be suitable for you at a later date.

Although it has the word ‘therapy’ in the course-title, this is not a therapy group or psychotherapy.

About Jiva – I am a qualified teacher of MBCT and I have been practicing and benefiting from the techniques of mindfulness since 1997.

If you would like to know more, I am available on the phone 01273 382 947 or via email yogijiva@yahoo.com. Course fees £50 /£80/£100 on a sliding scale according to income.
This fee includes all course materials of CDs and handouts, and support during the course.

From Hove catch the no.1 bus and alight at the Park Street stop in Eastern Road.

Access The interior of the Anahata Health Clinic is not on one level. There are a few steps to the front door. The bathroom is located upstairs. The Dragon Acu Project/Mindfulness course/Yoga classes are all held in a large downstairs room.
