Steph’s celebration raises £150 for the Group

Turning 40 can be a bit of a shock – not because I assumed I’d never reach it, just because it sort of crept up on me whilst I wasn’t paying attention!

My family all wanted me to celebrate my birthday properly (apparently a day, asleep, in bed wasn’t their idea of celebrating!) so we talked about lots of different options – having a barbecue was out (as my birthday falls the day before St Swithin’s Day it can one of the wettest times of the year!) and there’d be too many friends and family to cram into the house; my husband got quite excited about the thought of a disco or karaoke, but I just feel the noise levels aren’t everyone’s “cup of tea”, and I can only manage to dance to one song before I feel the need to flake out on the floor!

So after some thought, I decided to do something I’ve always enjoyed, when I’ve attended other ones – hold a Charity Race Night! One with “horse counters”, a giant grid and dice (much more fun for the kids than the video version). It’s a bit like a giant board game – but you buy horses before each race, and you “bet” on which horse will win – half goes into the pot as winnings and half goes to the charities.

I chose to raise money for two charities, St Catherine’s Hospice – as a number of loved ones have spent time there – and FMSSAS (for obvious reasons). I think for those who don’t know or understand about Fibromyalgia, it helped to also have a charity that they knew something about alongside.

What more can I say, except we had a fantastic time – and although I was (and still am) totally exhausted by the whole process, I’d definitely do it again. Everyone who came really enjoyed themselves, young and old (a number want to run their own race nights). And it’s certainly a birthday I’ll never forget.

Oh, and we raised £150 for the support group (+ £150 for St Catherine’s) – not bad for a night’s fun!

Our grateful thanks to Steph Tidy and her family for this fundraising celebration.
