Poems by Joan Chappell - fibro fighter!

Joan, who is a fibromite and a member of the FMS SAS Group, says:
"A bit about me. I was born in 1939 just as World War II broke out! Interests: cooking, history, walking, theatre, music with a passion for all sorts, (belonged  to a choral choir for 5 years), singing,  writing, writing Childrens Stories, poetry.
If there is one of your members who has similar interests and is trying to stay positive, I would be pleased to hear from her."
In fact, Joan would be interested in a fibro email pen-friend.

POEMS FOR 2009

Snow

Opened my curtains this early morning
Just as the sun came out and the day was dawning.
A magical sight I did see,
Snow covering everything as far as far can be.
Branches of trees bare of all leaves
Take on a different meaning
Snow covered and gleaming.

Kitchen

Into the kitchen did go this very day,
To make a goulash, to blow your mind away!
A touch of paprika, and spices here and there.
All prepared with such particular care.
Roulade to follow, oh so yummy
It will slide down so well in my tummy!
Replete will sink into a chair,
Wine in hand and not one care!

POEMS FOR 2008

Sinusitus - with Humour

For the past 6 weeks, Sinusitus I have had.
The pain has been pretty damn bad!

Antibiotics galore I have swallowed, have helped not a jot!
Then the Cat Scan showed an infection in the sinuses is wot I've got.

"D" day was Monday for my little "op",
Back home on Tuesday, but not quite ready to shop!

Recovery time I am now in. The occasional Kitkat has been known to pass my lips, Oh! What a sin.  I've just discovered Radio 7.
Comedy plays and thrillers, just sends me to heaven!

Tribute to Mo

Today is a very sad day
Our dear cat Mo, she has passed away
To a far better place,. Free from her pain
Her little heart no longer could take the strain
18 years of age was she.

Her life was full of love and joy
Where she could roam free
Such a hunter in her younger years
Baby rabbits, hedgehogs, she had no fears.
Placing them at our feet
This was meant to be oh! Such a treat

We were privileged to have her for so long
Happy memories we carry with us, like a song
Rest dear Mo, you are in a far better place
No pain or suffering, you know dwell in our Lords grace

Jerry lee Lewis

My lovely daughter has bought for me
A really great and colourful CD!
Jerry Lewis playing his piano

With blond wavy hair, for all to see
My! It takes me back to my teenage years
Jiving on the dance floor, getting breathless
Lots of laughters, very few tears!

Jerry Lewis, my he was a wild one indeed
He would stand on his piano
And play it with his feet
At breakneck speed!

2007

Joan held a Coffee Morning at her home in September 2007 and wrote this poem for the occasion. For a report of the event please go here.

The Coffee Morning.

A Coffee Morning at my house did hold.
Goodness me did not think I could be so bold!

Word went round the village
Posters they did see
On shop windows
All stuck there by me!

Fibromyalgia what on earth is that!
Maybe it’s something that’s brought in by the cat
Or is it a dish that is cooked on the fire
If I said that, you could call me a liar.

No come to my home and you will find out
What this FM is really all about!

Flare with a little humour

Here I am on the bed.
Lots of things going round in my head
Done every thing I can, to take control of FM
Guess what! It’s got me again!
Need to stay strong and just “be”
I think that’s got to be me.
Feelings of depression, disappointments galore!
Just means, strawberries and chocolates I have more!

Material Things

Life is such a wondrous thing.
It makes me want to sing!
Compassion, Love, our world sadly lacks.
Material things are what attracts.

Barbecue with special friends

Went to Pauline and Roberts today.
Such generous hosts in every way
The sun shone down my! It was hot,
The men sweated, ladies perspired, but not a lot!
To be with friends is just up my street!
There patio is huge
We could dance up and down in bare feet!

TV Gone Mad- Fibro Fog?

Felt right good, had videoed so many films for a rainy day.
What happened, next just blew my mind right away!
Started on film 1, this was not right.
In sub titles and all in black and white.
Ah well on to film 2
Its on sky box office – you have to pay to view!
I give up, am listening instead to the radio.
It’s the evening play don’t you know!

‘Restless Legs' Day

Restless legs indeed I do have today.
A walk to John O Groats or Lands End is not that far away!

Detatch them, I am thinking of doing, and let them wander on a whim.
They could get to Brighton, Margate, Southend and back agin!

Another beautiful sunny day, fluffy clouds skudding by
in the glorious blue sky.

Birds winging their way to warmer climes.
Our grandfather clock rings out melodic chimes.

Professor Davies I do see tomorrow,
even though I feel such sorrow,

Pain so very severe,
can do hardly anything, but enjoy Gods nature , so very dear.

Have to stay strong in my faith that He indeed
has a high success rate - that’s all I need.

Memory Lane

Down memory lane I went today,
to the Cavern in Liverpool straight away.
In the basement I sat myself down
to look at everything all around.

Young people were jiving on the dance floor,
Girls in v-necked jumpers, billowing skirts galore.
Lads with slicked-back hair shiny mohair suits they wore.
On the stage four young lads with pudding basin hair styles with fringe to boot,
all in black collarless suits.

Ringo on drums, George and John on guitars, guess who I am meaning,
'Hey Jude', 'Love, love me do.'
Hey has MY dream come true?
The magic of the Beatles I am listening to.

FMS

My Graham he has been such a very busy bee,
hoovering, ironing as quick as can be.
Into the garden he now does go, my how the time does flow.
Weather sunny today, my walk did take, though rather painful on the way,
decided a skateboard I do need,
will get my jobs done with such great speed.
To the hairdressers again do go, grit my teeth till the job is done
Oh what such jolly fun!

Video Fog!

Down the road I went today,
to take the video back straight away.
My little car did take me there.
Its so in need of tender loving care.
Into the shop I did roam,
what a silly Wally I left the video back at home!

Christmas 1

Today am listening to my first Christmas songs.
Jesus was born to right all wrongs,
In a humble manger
with Joseph and Mary.

The bright star shone in the sky this night
It truly was such a wondrous sight!
The three wise men were travelling and followed this star,
their intention to worship sweet Jesus, but not from afar.
Their camels indeed
were making great speed.

The wise men were following the glorious white light.
The manger now was in sight.
The wise men glorified the one born this night.
They bowed their heads at this pure holy sight.

Christmas 2

Christmas eve it is indeed today.
The true meaning of Christmas has long since flown away!
Listening to carols on the radio.
Many people will have nowhere to go.
Elderly folk all alone in their homes.
The decision they have - to eat, or heat the home where they dwell.

So many of them have gone through sheer hell.
In first and second world wars, they did serve.
This is not what they deserve.
Neighbours no longer call in to see how they are.
Too busy leading their own lives
From afar.

My teenage years!

Sound of the 60s I am listening to today.
Takes me right back there straight away.
In an open topped car with girls and boys,
Our hair blowing in the wind, joy of joys!
Coming from the radio Gerry and the pacemakers
Oh! Such a noise.

Our car now stops outside a brightly coloured coffee shop.
In we all go for a cappuccino.
The juke box blares out. Ah well that's that.
Back in the car we pile.
To discuss where the next party or dance is going to be.
Guess what! Its right round the corner from me!

Dentist

Three quarters of an hour in the dentists chair, was I today.
Mouth wide open injection on its way!
Got myself a new front tooth,
It’s not quite real, and that’s the truth!
Back again to lay in the chair,
More drilling and filling to be done, I do declare.

Autumn

Autumn is surely on its way.
Colours of leaves and trees, so beautiful to survey.
Russet browns and orange to view,
Even reds are in a glorious hue!
Tramping along the pathway leaves already fallen,
Create a magical carpet.
For all of us to walk upon.

55 plus home catalogue

Busy Bee have I been this day 55 plus,
They came right away.
Knock on the door lady in white.
3 parcels of blue, oh what a sight!
Trying on trousers, get 2 legs in one hole.
Fell on the floor. What a right rigmarole

Butterfly

A glorious butterfly on my walk I did see.
A tortoiseshell, brown and black was he.
Spreading open his wings for the sun to shine there upon.
He looked as though he was having oh such fun!
My walk continued along the high street.
Alas, nobody, but nobody did I meet!
My legs continue on their merry way.
I am glancing at trees, sky and birds.
Chattering, they are having their say!

Birthdays

My birthday it is indeed today,
67, I am blown right away.
My bus pass I should order soon,
To get to me before high noon
Creamy cake I have indulged in my tummy.
It is really oh quite yummy.
Chocolate also has passed my lips.
You never know, next it might be fish and chips!

Nature

A magical sight did see yesterday.
A pheasant colours so glorious, came out to play.
In the front garden did see him strut his stuff,
Pecking the earth, that is so very tough.
The heron also did spy, balanced high
In our tulip tree, nearly reaching the sky.

Rock n Roll

Sitting on the settee, sunshine streaming in,
Tapping my feet to 60 s hits what a sin!
Brings back such happy memories of teenage years,
Fun laughter and even some tears.
Coffee bars, juke boxes blaring our rock n roll,
Great for jiving to, hits the very soul.
Boys in teddy boy jackets, drainpipe trousers, thick crepe soled shoes too.
Girls wearing crinoline stiff petticoats under billowing skirts you could almost see thru!
Sparkling crystal ball above, sending out wonderful spiralling colours lighting up the ballroom floor.
Girls eagerly waiting for that special boy or more, to invite her for the last waltz.
Would he ask to take her home or not?
Such questions tied you all in a knot!

God's Nature Walk

Down the road I went today.
Sunny weather all the way!
Birds in tree tops I could hear
Feel Gods presence every where.
Church bells ringing on the hill top.
Horses passing by clipity clop!
